FATHER VERSUS SON RIVALRIES IN MONSTER JAM
Scott Douglass

Untitled Document Father versus son rivalries are not new in motorsports, but they are new to Monster Jam and the fans in Roanoke saw a family first when Dan and Deric Evans raced head-to-head, in the event finals no less, at the Civic Center in the Virginia city. Chapter one in a story that will likely have several volumes went to the kid, as Deric drove his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle to the championship round win over his Dad's Destroyer.

You could see the unique mixture of emotions on Dan's face immediately after the race that made Evans family history. Dan is as competitive as they come so he was understandably ticked off by the loss but at the same moment his pride in his son was obvious. At the same time Dan has no plan to become his son's whipping boy. I'm sure that he can't wait to even the score, and you will have to make the old man the favorite if that next meeting comes on a huge stadium or dome floor where Dan has years of experience and Deric has only a handful of races under his belt on long turning courses. Roanoke's quick straight-line course was mastered by the younger Evans whose quick reaction time may have been the difference in the first round between father and son.

Deric and Dan have now raced each other in Monster Jam competition yet the sport's most famous father-son combo, Dennis and Adam Anderson so far have not. A year ago it seemed that we would see that father-son showdown before we saw the Evans' square off, but we are still waiting for that first Dennis versus Adam racing battle. If we see their first meeting this year more than likely it will come at the Monster Jam World Finals March 24 in Las Vegas.

With Dennis still recovering from a myriad of injuries that keep him on the sidelines, at least for the time being, Adam continues to uphold the family honor driving Dad's Grave Digger truck. Last weekend the Anderson's were in Pittsburgh for four arena events where Adam drove Grave Digger XX to victory in every one of the 12 competitions held in Mellon Arena. Yes it was a small facility, competing against a small but talented field but the rest of 2007 Adam has been driving Dad's truck and amassing wins at the sport's highest level. The 21 year old has been phenomenal and he figures to be even better when Dad is back behind the wheel of his Digger truck and Adam hops back into Taz.

Like Dan Evans, I think Dennis Anderson has mixed emotions regarding his kid's success. Both Dads are proud as they can be of their sons but neither is ready to step away and leave the entire spotlight to their offspring, at least just yet. Dennis was in Pittsburgh delighting in Adam's dominance but at the same time you can see the icon is chomping at the bit to get back into action. For Dennis the day can't come soon enough when he is burning up the tracks again in Grave Digger, and I think the competitor in him can't wait to. race his son. Adam has beaten his Dad in freestyle, but that's not the same as squaring off man to man in a race, a battle where no one else is in the contest besides father and son.

Dennis is not yet sure when he can get back in the truck but he expects it to be soon, and fully plans to defend his World Racing Championship in Las Vegas. Based on what he has done subbing for his Dad Adam is sure to be in the finals field as well, so who knows, that highly anticipated Dennis versus Adam race may be just around the corner.
