I Can't Hear You
Karin Colucci/Staff Writer
Monster Mutt's floppy ears aren't the only thing making folks take a second look at this new monster truck ...

Todd Frolick, won the Minneapolis show (his hometown event - and only his second in his new truck) this weekend, literally, by a tongue.  Monster Mutt’s floppy doggy tongue edged out Pablo Huffaker in Grave Digger for the racing win at the Metrodome.

A few years ago, Todd was driving for Team Grave Digger.  But Todd has had taken the last few years away from monster truck driving – looking for a truck that better fit his personality and spending some time adjusting to married life.  When the opportunity arose to drive Monster Mutt said Frolick, “I thought it was funny because I have a circle track race team called DirTDog Racing and I’m a real dog lover.”

Monster Mutt is a character truck, unlike any of the other trucks Frolick has driven.  “Bear Foot was all about sponsorship and that was very prim and proper.  And Grave Digger – well, Grave Digger is a legend and you have to live up to that.  Monster Mutt – well, people are more interested in the truck itself that whether or not ‘you’re going to tear something up.’  It’s strange the fans have a friendly reaction into the truck.  People have even had me autograph pictures of their dogs – probably as a way to break the ice in the autograph line – but it’s still pretty neat.”

Monster Mutt has floppy leather-like ears, and a obviously advantageous panting tongue.  Frolick hopes that somehow, someday they can add a water-pump to the tongue to make it appear that Monster Mutt is really panting.

After 2 years without any seat time in a monster Frolick felt good behind the wheel of the Mutt.  He felt bad that he broke the rear end of the truck in Anaheim, making work for his crew before the Minneapolis event.  He hope that this year he can adjust to being in a truck that lands a bit harder that the trucks that he is used to driving and has smaller windows.

Todd’s first run in Monster Mutt was in Anaheim. “When the truck showed up in Anaheim it was all ready to go – all the guys had to do was give it a shine.  It has really good equipment and that gave me a lot of confidence and confidence make people good,” commented Frolick.

Fans have a natural love for the monster, in Frolick’s opinion, because, “people love their pets and a dog is something that they can instantly relate to. Little kids who are usually afraid of the monster trucks don’t seem to be afraid of Monster Mutt.”

It looks like Monster Mutt is working his way into the hearts of crowds from coast to coast – as Frolick lifts the Mutt’s floppy ears to the crowd during the monster truck introductions asking for the crowd to cheer louder as if to say, “he can’t hear them.”
