Weekend Race Recap
Saturday - 7:30PM Twenty hours before the event, it was official, Anaheim #1 was a sell-out! Even
with the chilliest temps in recent history the fans were a part of one of the
wildest race nights in California.
In the Richardson's RV monster qualifying, it was Neil Elliot and Maximum
Destruction setting fast time with a 18.94. But Rick Swanson and his FAB-TECH
Obsession had the jaws dropping of his competitors. Even with a 10 second penalty
Rick ran a 27.93, so minus the penalty and the FAB-TECH Obsession would have
been the truck to beat. As it turns out though it WAS Neil Elliot that blazed
his way through the field and won the HAHM Marine monster truck finals over
Hot Wheels.
In the hotly contested quad war main event, team Anaheim won after team Las
Vegas thought the race had ended with 2 laps remaining and pulled off like they
had swept the top 3 positions. NOT!
As it got later in the night it was getting colder by the minute, but you
wouldn't know it by what was happening on the track during the UTI monster truck
free-style contest. Newcomer Bobby Parr, driving Team Suzuki, had the top score
for quite a while with an impressive 25. Then it was Lupe Soza and El Toro Loco
that scored a HUGE save that brought the entire building to its feet. Lupe scored
a 27 to overtake the lead. But his run that put him in the penthouse was short
lived when Neil Elliot and Maximum Destruction did their typical "WORLD
FINALS" caliber run using every square inch of the track and doing it with
only three good sneakers. Huge air and high speeds scored the Max D team a 29.
It didn't stop there! The final truck of the night was the 2006 world finals
racing champion Charlie Paulken and Grave-Digger. Thousands upon thousands of
camera flashes were going off every single time the monster and its pilot soared
through the air. And for good reason, Charlie and Digger more than earned a
perfect 30 with a high speed donut that ended with Digger upside down!
It will be 2 more weeks before we come back to Anaheim #2 and do it all over
again, but Charlie Paulken and Neil Elliot are already keeping score with a win
a piece and looking towards the World Finals in Las Vegas this March.
