Weekend Race Recap

Friday - 19:00 -

Dan Evans won his third European racing event of the 2008 Monster Jam World Tour driving Jetix to the championship round racing win over reigning World Champion John Seasock in Batman, and Chad Tingler continued his freestyle domination, winning that competition in Grave Digger to begin a weekend of four sold out events at the Globe in Stockholm, Sweden.

After setting the fastest qualifying time on the Chicago style oval race course Evans used victories over Anders Flogard and Thor, then Candice Jolly in the Monster Mutt Dalmatian to gain another berth in a Euro finale, and in a great championship race Evans pulled Jetix home a narrow winner over Seasock and Batman. The crowd then was on its feet for the star-studded freestyle where Tingler put Grave Digger on the winner’s stage, a one-point winner over Neil Elliott and Maximum Destruction.

The first competition of the night was won by Elliott, whose incredible sky wheelie ended with him flipping Maximum Destruction onto its roof after wheelie walking the car stack, Max-D winning the Wheelie Competition by two points over Batman.

Saturday - 13:00 -
Enjoying his first ever trip to Europe Neil Elliott grabbed both the racing win and the wheelie competition victory in Maximum Destruction before Chad Tingler drove Grave Digger to yet another freestyle win in front of another sell out crowd Saturday afternoon at the Globe in Stockholm, Sweden .

For the second straight event in the Swedish arena Elliott nailed a huge sky wheelie to open the event with that victory. Then Elliott mastered the Chicago style oval race course, turning in the fastest qualifying time for the number one seed in the racing bracket. Dan Evans, who won the weekend opening race event Friday night in Jetix had problems right from the start Saturday afternoon, landing hard on the right front tire two thirds of the way through his qualification run. With the Jetix truck corkscrewing onto its side Evans pulled out an amazing save, but the truck suffered extensive front end damage. Several crews pitched into to help and the mechanics in the pits did an amazing job to replace a four-link bar and the front drive shaft in time to get Jetix onto the track for a first round racing match-up against the fastest qualifier. As Maximum Destruction was rolling to the win in that race Evans luck went from bad to worse, blowing the engine and sending the crew into another thrash, this time having to change an engine to have Jetix ready for the Saturday night event.

After his win over Jetix Elliott eliminated Candice Jolly in the Monster Mutt Dalmatian to advance Max-D into the championship race. On the other side of the bracket Tingler powered Grave Digger to triumphs over John Seasock and Batman, then popular Swede Anders Flogard in Thor to set-up the Monster Jam fans dream final, Grave Digger vs. Maximum Destruction. The race lived up to the anticipation with Elliott pulling out a narrow victory. On the winners stage Elliott was ecstatic. “The truck felt great” Neil told the cheering crowd. “Everyone back there in the pits knows what a great driver Chad is, so I’m really thrilled to be able to get this win. Now it’s time for freestyle!”

In freestyle Max-D grabbed the lead with a big air performance but Tingler was up to the challenge, whipping the Digger all around the arena with high flying moves that included several impressive combos and then closing with some great, difficult donuts on the extremely tacky clay surface to record the freestyle competition win. On the stage celebrating the victory Tingler thanked the thousands of Grave Digger fans on hand for cheering him on to the win.

Swedish rider Daniel Bodin again amazed his home town crowd with a wide array of tricks, including a couple of back flips to win the freestyle motocross competition.

Saturday - 19:00 -
The Globe was rockin’ Saturday night and Chad Tingler turned the event into a huge Grave Digger party, sweeping all three competitions against an all-star line-up in front of a raucous, capacity crowd in Stockholm.

The night opened with the wheelie contest and Neil Elliott, looking for his third straight wheelie win, nailed another beauty, burying the back of Maximum Destruction at a perfect 90 degree angle into the crush cars, but this time Tingler was up to Max-D’s challenge and also hit a classic wheelie. The judges could not pick a winner between the pair, scoring both with a 26, so the entire crowd was enlisted to break the tie with a cheer-off and the crowd chose Grave Digger, narrowly, over Maximum Destruction.

Next up was the racing bracket, with Elliott earning the top seed after Max-D laid down the fastest qualifying time, a scant .04 of a second quicker than Grave Digger. Maximum Destruction eliminated Candice Jolly in Monster Mutt Dalmatian and then Swede Anders Flogard in Thor to advance into the championship race from the upper bracket, while in the lower half Tingler drove Grave Digger to wins over World Champion John Seasock in Batman and Dan Evans in Jetix, setting up another renewal of the greatest rivalry in motorsports, and again, the actual race lived up to the hype, and then some. The pair of arch-rivals left the line equally and they were even for the entire race, crossing the finish line at virtually the same time. After several looks at the video replay it was clear that Grave Digger had the win by, literally, inches. Jetix made it into the race bracket after more incredible work by the pit crews from all of the teams on hand who got together and changed engines in the big Ford after Jetix had its motor destroyed in the Saturday afternoon matinee.

With the popular pair of Grave Digger and Maximum Destruction neck and neck all night it was natural that they would both rock the house in freestyle, and boy did they ever deliver. Candice Jolly brought the crowd to its feet again when her Monster Mutt Dalmatian flipped onto its floppy ears during her run, but it was Elliott who grabbed the lead in Max-D with another huge air assault. After Maximum Destruction had raised the bar again Tingler was up to another challenge and turned in a brilliant freestyle full of big air, awesome combos, and a pair of great saves. For the first time all weekend the three judges each held up a 10, giving Grave Digger a perfect score and a clean sweep of the trio of Monster Jam competitions Saturday night.

Sunday - 14:00 -
Less than 24 hours after watching arch rival Grave Digger sweep all three Monster Jam competitions Neil Elliott responded to the challenge with a sweep of his own, adding three more victories to the weekend total for Maximum Destruction in the Sunday finale of the four show weekend at the Globe in Stockholm, Sweden.

The fourth straight capacity crowd of the record setting weekend was wowed right off the bat with one of the wildest wheelie contests ever. First it was Candice Jolly hitting a huge wheel stand in the Monster Mutt Dalmatian, but the floppy eared machine ended up rolling over onto its roof. Then Neil Elliott, who said that he had something to prove this weekend in wheelie action, again blasted Max-D into the air, executing a close to perfect sky wheelie. Elliott’s effort was so good that he flew across the car stack and planted the rear of Maximum Destruction, literally, into the dirt ramp. Elliott climbed down out of the truck, still propped on its tail at a 90 degree angle to the ground, and received a standing ovation from the Swedish crowd. Next out was John Seasock who stunned the fans again when he went huge and flipped Batman over, but even the wild rolls from Mutt and Batman followed by another massive sky wheelie from Grave Digger was not enough to deny Elliott the victory. Elliott said the other drivers on the Monster Jam World Tour were claiming that he would not be able to be competitive in the wheelie competition due to the front engine design of Maximum Destruction and the fact that Neil’s truck is 7 years old. Elliott set out to prove his colleagues wrong, and he did just that all weekend long.

In the racing competition Dan Evans set the fastest qualifying time in Jetix, giving all the credit to the crews of each team who pitched in by putting a new motor into Jetix to get him back on the track after the truck suffered a blown engine Saturday afternoon. In the first round Jetix squared off with Maximum Destruction in a heavyweight opening battle between two of the most successful trucks on this year’s European circuit. As expected the race was tight from the start, then even though the trucks were still dead even, Evans thought he was slightly behind heading into the final turn, so Evans went to the whip looking for a little extra, but Jetix nudged the turning pole. The pole swayed from one side to the other and appeared as if it was going to remain standing only to fall over at the last second. Jetix nosed out Max-D by inches as the pair flew across the finish line, but the five second penalty for knocking over the turning pole eliminated Evans’ Ford and Maximum Destruction advanced to round two where Elliott defeated John Seasock and Batman to advance to his third championship race of the weekend. Joining Maximum Destruction in the finale once again was Tingler, who drove Grave Digger to an exciting semifinal win, by about a half a truck length, over impressive Swedish driver Anders Flogard in Thor. The excited crowd was treated to a classic Digger-Max-D battle for the event win with Elliott gaining revenge for his Saturday night loss to Tingler, this race going to Maximum Destruction.

The weekend wrapped up with a start to finish high energy freestyle competition, as Elliott’s ground shaking performance grabbed the triumph for the Sunday afternoon sweep. Tingler gave Elliott a run for the win for sure, but when he flipped Grave Digger onto its lid to end the scintillating weekend of awesome performances he left some time on the clock and Max-D had the win.

Speaking of sweeps, Swedish rider Daniel Bodin used some crowd pleasing back flips to win his fourth consecutive freestyle motocross competition.
