Monster Jam crowned its two new World Champions
Saturday night in Las Vegas at the Monster Jam NGK
Spark Plugs World Finals with John Seasock driving
Batman to the racing title for the second straight
year and Adam Anderson winning the freestyle crown in
Taz, becoming not only the first second generation
star to take a world title, but also becoming Monster
Jam's youngest ever World Champion.
Tom Meents topped the double down festivities Friday
night by turning in the fastest qualifying time, then
Saturday Meents looked dominant throughout the race
competition, roaring through the upper half of the
bracket, then defeating Jimmy Creten in Bounty Hunter
in the semifinals to earn a berth in the Championship
Race. That's when mechanical problems stunned the
Max-D team, the truck unable to start for the
Championship Race allowing Creten and Bounty Hunter to
get back into the battle for the crown, taking Max-D's
spot in the finale.
In the bottom half of the bracket Seasock methodically
mowed down the competition round after round,
eliminating surprising Alex Blackwell and Captain's
Curse in the semifinals. The Championship Race was
Seasock's for the second straight year, following up
last year's final round win over Grave Digger with
this year's triumph over Bounty Hunter. Seasock joins
Meents as the only drivers to win back to back World
Racing Championships, Meents having won three racing
titles in a row from 2000 to 2002.
With the crowd coming to its feet for standing ovation
after standing ovation throughout the freestyle
competition, the 24 truck field was put on notice from
the start that it would take a truly special
performance to win that title. Coming out first in the
event Chad Tingler powered Monster Mutt Dalmatian
through an amazing run that grabbed the lead with a
score of 32. Tingler's score would stay at the top for
most of the first half of the competition, then it was
Dawn Creten turning in maybe the greatest freestyle of
her career to knock Tingler out of the Hot Seat.
Creten not only filled the clock in Scarlet Bandit
with an incredible start to finish run, her final
move, a wild leap over the triple bus stack threw her
Ford Expedition into a barrell rolling, then pirouette
style flip, with the truck landing back on its wheels
and continuing on to finish filling the clock. Dawn
moved into the top spot with a score of 36, and she
stayed on top as superstar after superstar came out
and rocked the house but ultimately came up short of
Scarlet's score.
With only three trucks to go the possibility of having
the first husband and wife World Champions was alive
(Jimmy Creten having won the World Freestyle
Championship in 2005), but in the end Monster Jam has
its first father - son World Champion combo. Adam
Anderson's run in Taz had everything including some of
the most amazing high-flying cross thread moves ever
seen, and Anderson grabbed the lead by getting extra
points for filling the bonus time, ending with a total
of 37. His Dad, a former three-time World Champion,
had a strong performance but Dennis flipped Grave
Digger with too much time on the clock to win this
year's title. The final contestant was Meents, but
Max-D broke a wheel and flipped early in the run,
leaving Adam Anderson as the last man standing,
claiming his first World Championship.
