Weekend Race Recap

Friday Night:
Race Winner: Black Stallion
Freestyle Winner: Grave Digger

A sell-out crowd came Friday night to see the Superstars of Monster Jam deliver their own kind of excitement. Fans left talking about how they wanted to come back for the Saturday event but that too is already sold-out.

The nights action began from almost the minute the doors opened with incredible R.C. trucks racing in their own Mini Monster Jam. Next was the Legends Cars running on dirt, followed by practice sessions for the Quad Wars Teams of Georgia and Virginia. Again, this was all BEFORE the event officially began.

Promptly at 7:30 Monster Jam began, that was the beginning of problems for Grave Digger as Randy Brown lost a transmission in introductions. Randy did manage to get Digger to work in the wheelie contest fairly well tying with Black Stallion and Iron Warrior with scores of 22. Judges determined the win went to Trey Myers aboard Iron Warrior. Warrior rolled in the contest but suffered only body damage. The fans loved it.

With problems aboard Grave Digger forcing him out of the racing competition, Steve Sims had his own problems with Stone Crusher. Crusher was forced to race with only front wheel drive but held his own into the semifinals only to be beaten by Black Stallion in the finals. Thanks heavens for the intermission. That 15 minutes gave both trucks the chance to get their problems taken care of for Freestyle.

The Freestyle competition took on a new look with each truck doing a 60 second run and the next truck immediately roaring out to begin the next run. It is not until after all trucks run that the top scores were announced to either the drivers of the fans. The scores were close but in the end it was Grave Digger that won the event.

The night also saw a great Quad Wars battle both teams won one heat and Georgia won the main. A question from Team Virginia captain Greg Jones ended with a one on one match between the two team captains. That battle ended with Virginia earning the checkered flag. The confrontation will continue Saturday night.

Jody Donnelly and crew thrilled the fans with non-stop action on two wheels. You had to see it to believe it. The performance gave the fans back flips from all riders, nose-dives, 360 turns and flips and much more.

Saturday Night:

The second night of Monster Jam began with a sold out crowd and a fired up Mike Vaters driving his Black Stallion Ford. Stallion won the racing competition the night before and was going to do his best to make it three in a row. He started out strong wwinning the Wheelie Competition but ran into a brick wall of Black and Green the rest of the night.

Randy Brown drove Grave Digger to wins in both racing and freestyle. The fact is that all drivers took the competition to the next level and gave the fans more and more with each pass. Rookie drivers Chris Baker aboard El Toro Loco and Jeremy Slifco in Back Draft rolled their trucks in freestyle. The track was very tacky and the young drivers were attempting to do donuts when things fell apart.

Still the night was one of very close competition with Black Stallion winning the Wheelie Contest with only one point separating him from three other trucks. Stallion had a 22 while Grave Digger, Iron Warrior and Stone Crusher scored 21 each.

In Freestyle Grave Digger was a one point leader over Stone Crusher with a 24-23. Racing also was close with the more experienced Randy Brown using a great hold shot off the line to beat Chris Baker in El Toro Loco by inches. Local truck Stone Crusher and driver Steve Sims was on top of his game as fans of the Virginia Beach truck came out in force to support him.

The nights Quad Wars came down to a grudge match between Georgia and Virginia. Georgia put up everything in a winner take all for the weekend showdown. The exciting two man relay brought fans to their feet for the entire race. Flag waving and cheers from the fans powered Virginia to victory.

The BMX stunt team brought to life the excitement many had only seen on television. The A game was evident as back flips, 360’s and nonstop action kept fans glued to their seats.

Legends Cars from the area brought a new dimension of racing to the Coliseum floor and a surprise visit from Speeds Sara Dayley, host of Monster Jam was another crowd pleaser.

While the big wins of the night went to Grave Digger it was the thousands of fans that were truly winners Saturday Night.
